The building of the National Palace of Ajuda didn't get built without its share of troubles. The structure you see today isn't the original. The palace was originally planned as a summer residence in the first half of the 18th century by King John V, but construction would only begin after Paço da Ribeira, the royal residence in the centre of Lisbon, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The first Palace of Ajuda was made from wood, but burned down in 1794. Then, the much more fire-proof building you see today was constructed. To this day, ceremonies for the Republic and the presidency are held in the palace.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art: Entry Ticket
The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado has been in the Convent of São Francisco da Cidade since 1911. This set of buildings suffered serious damage in the 1755 earthquake, and after a fire in 1988, the museum reopened in 1994. The museum was created by splitting the former National Museum of Fine Arts into two. The National Museum of Ancient Art received works made until 1850. The National Museum of Contemporary Art hosts works from after 1850 and is now situated in the Convent of São Francisco. You will find exhibitions featuring paintings, sculptures, and drawings from 1850 to 1975. You’ll see works by notable artists from the 19th century, including romanticism to symbolism, and from the 20th century, covering modernism and conceptual art.

It features a large Serlian-style cloister, a chapter room completed in 1724, a sacristy built in the early 18th century, a second cloister from the same period, and an entrance and bell tower, both completed around 1738, designed by Manuel da Costa Negreiros.
